Five Olivet College student-athletes named Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholars
Olivet College student-athletes Jalen Broussard, Andrew Campbell, Liam Kinjorski, Karina Marin and Rachel Webb have been named 2021 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholars. They were recognized in the April 29 issue of the Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine.
FAIRFAX, Va. – Olivet College student-athletes Jalen Broussard, Andrew Campbell, Liam Kinjorski, Karina Marin and Rachel Webb have been named 2021 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholars. To be considered for the award, minority student-athletes must have a 3.20 or higher cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale, be at least a sophomore, been an active member of an intercollegiate athletic team during the 2020-21 academic year, and demonstrate service to the campus or community.
A sports and recreation management major, Broussard is a third-team selection on the football team. His volunteer work includes monitoring and interacting with local elementary students, and distributor and unloader of Christmas trees in his hometown of Grand Rapids. On the football field, Broussard has played in 11 career games for the Comets, recording 37 catches for 459 yards and four touchdowns. He was named to the 2019-20 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic Honor Roll, and Olivet Dean's List each of his first three semesters at Olivet.
An accounting major, Campbell is also a third-team pick on the football team. He has volunteered for Olivet's income tax assistance clinic, serves as an accounting tutor and various volunteer work at Fern Persons Elementary School. During his time at Olivet, Campbell has seen action in 23 games and tallied 105 total tackles. He was selected to the 2019-20 MIAA Academic Honor Roll, and has appeared on the Dean's List five times and President's List once.
A history major, Kinjorski is a first-team selection on the wrestling team and is being honored for the second straight year. He serves as secretary for Olivet's History Club. On the wrestling mat, Kinjorski has compiled a 24-13 career record. Twenty of his 24 victories have been pins. He is a two-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll, and is also a two-time National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-American.
An exercise science major, Marin is a second-team pick on the softball team for a second consecutive year. Her volunteer work includes being a resident assistant, and member of the President's Leadership Institute and Phi Epsilon Kappa. Marin also serves as the vice president of the Pinky Swear Foundation PACK Program, which provides financial and emotional support to children and families who are battling cancer. On the softball field, she has played in 60 games and has a .252 batting average (33-of-131). Marin is a two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll honoree, and has been on the Dean's List each of her five semesters at Olivet.
An accounting major, Webb is a second-team pick on the golf team after being a first-team pick in 2020. She was a fellow for the President's Leadership Institute and has volunteered at Olivet's income tax assistance clinic. On the golf course, Webb has posted a 96.5 stroke average over 43 career rounds, with her career-best 18-hole score being an 82. She is a two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll and Women's Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar selection. Webb was selected to the Olivet President's List three semesters and the Dean's List five times.
