Comets of the Week - September 2, 2024
The Co-Female Comet of the Week is senior women’s volleyball player Abi Nunez, of Hillsdale, and graduate of North Adams-Jerome High School. Nunez helped Olivet post a 3-1 record at the Great Lakes Cross Over Tournament. For the four matches, she totaled 61 kills (averaging 4.07 per set), recorded a .252 attack percentage and contributed 54 digs (averaging 3.60 per set).
The Co-Female Comet of the Week is freshman women’s soccer player Ella McCormic, of DeWitt, and graduate of Grand Ledge High School. McCormic scored Olivet’s lone goal in a 1-1 tie in the season-opener against Bluffton (Ohio) University and followed that with one of the goals in a 2-0 shutout over University of Michigan-Dearborn. For the two games, she totaled seven shots, including three on-goal.
The Male Comet of the Week is freshman men’s golfer Zachary Pier, of Portland, and graduate of Portland High School. Pier earned medalist honors at the Lou Collins Memorial Tournament. He shot a one-over par 73 in the first round and a one-under par 71 in the second round to give him a two-round total of 144 strokes. Over the 36 holes, Pier had 11 birdies, 15 pars, nine bogies and one double bogey. He won the tournament by one stroke over Emiliano Alvarado Rescala from Kalamazoo and Andrew Platt from Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) who had matching 145s.
