Comets of the Week - October 14, 2024
The Male Comet of the Week is sophomore goalkeeper Nicholas Van Port Fleet, of Fort Myers, Florida, and graduate of Estero High School. Van Port Fleet played a pivotal role in helping the men’s soccer team tie Adrian College, 0-0, in its first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association contest. He made five saves to preserve the shutout win and snap the Bulldogs’ nine-game winning streak to open the season. He followed that performance with three saves in a tough 1-0 loss to Hope College. The only goal allowed came when a Hope player scored on a rebound when a teammate’s shot was blocked by a Comet defender.
The Female Comet of the Week is senior goalkeeper Sarah Willard, of Galesburg, and graduate of Gull Lake High School. Willard had 12 saves in a home game against Kalamazoo College and followed that with 17 saves in a road game against Calvin University. The 17 saves are the tied for fourth-most in a game for a UOlivet player since the 2004 season. The 29 saves for the week give her 271 career saves, which is the second-most for a player since 2004.
