Dean Trailways Comets of the Week - April 26, 2021
This week’s Dean Trailways Female Comet of the Week is senior Kaylee Clothier, of Battle Creek, and graduate of Pennfield High School. Clothier posted a .364 batting average for the softball team last week. She had four hits, including two doubles and two home runs to give her a 1.091 slugging percentage. With the two homers, Clothier moved into a tie for sixth all-time at Olivet with nine, and her four RBI moved her into a tie for ninth all-time with 56.
The first Dean Trailways Male Comet of the Week is freshman Matthew Fennell, of St. Clair Shores, and graduate of Lakeview High School. In the first game of a baseball doubleheader at Kalamazoo, he broke the single-game school record with three triples. The three triples is also tied for the third-most in NCAA Division III history for a game. Last week, Fennell played in all six games and drove in a team-best eight runs.
The second Dean Trailways Male Comet of the Week is senior Jacob Smith, of Sumner, and graduate of Carson City Crystal High School. With a toss of 48 feet, 4-3/4 inches, Smith beat a field of 18 total competitors to win the shot put at the Hillsdale College “Gina” Relays. The winning mark was more than two feet further than the runner-up finisher He also finished third of 26 total student-athletes, but first among 13 NCAA Division III competitors, in the discus throw with a toss of 136 feet, 11 inches.
The third Dean Trailways Male Comet of the Week is freshman Jeremiah Sterling, of Benton Harbor, and graduate of St. Joseph High School. In his first collegiate start for the football team, he had 30 carries for 240 yards, which is the sixth-most yards in a single game in school history.
