Women’s Volleyball: Olivet defeats Anderson in four sets

OLIVET, Mich. –The University of Olivet women's volleyball defeated Anderson (Ind.) University in four sets tonight at the Cutler Event Center. The Comets won the first set 25-18 before a late rally helped the Ravens win the second set, 26-24. Olivet won the match with a 25-18 win in set three and 25-14 win in set four.

- The Ravens led 5-4 in the first set before a kill by junior Hayleah McFadden and back-to-back aces by senior Morgan Dillon put the Comets ahead 7-5. Olivet did not give up the lead for the rest of the set.
- Anderson took a 13-8 lead in the second set. The Comets battled back with a 9-1 run to go up 17-14. Olivet led by four points two more times. After the second time at 21-17, the Ravens scored six straight points to go up 23-21. The Comets scored the next three points to get to set point, but Anderson responded with its own 3-0 spurt to win the set.
- Two Raven attack errors followed by two Olivet kills helped the Comets score the first four points of the third set. Olivet stretched its lead to five points, 10-5. Anderson battled back to even the score at 11-11, 12-12 and 14-14. The Comets reeled off eight consecutive points to take a commanding 22-14 lead. The Ravens scored the next four points before Olivet closed the set with a 3-0 run.
- A service error put Anderson up 1-0 in the fourth set. That would be the Ravens' only lead in the set.
- For the match, Olivet totaled 49 kills compared to 45 for Anderson. The difference in the match was the Comets posted a higher attack percentage -- .144 to .071.
- McFadden led the Comets with 17 kills.
- Junior Abi Nunez had 10 kills, followed by Dillon with nine, and sophomore Violet Porter and junior Alia Riehl with six apiece.
- Junior Teagan Giannunzio tallied a double-double with 43 set assists and 20 digs.
- Sophomore Jaydn Cary finished with a match-high 27 digs.
- Also reaching double figures in digs were Nunez (20), junior Maddie Reynolds (18) and senior Emily Keeler (13). As a team, Olivet had 113 digs, which is the fourth-most in a four-set match since the 2004 season.
- Olivet competes at the Rose-Hulman (Ind.) Institute of Technology Tournament Friday and Saturday at Hulbert Arena in Terra Haute, Indiana. On Friday, the Comets play Anderson at 5 p.m., followed by a match against Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) University. On Saturday, Olivet faces Asbury (Ky.) University at 1 p.m., followed by a match against the host Fightin' Engineers.
