Volleyball team defeats Alma in five sets
The Olivet College women’s volleyball team defeated Alma College in a five-set thriller today at Art Smith Arena in Alma.
ALMA, Mich. – The Olivet College women's volleyball team defeated Alma College in a five-set thriller today at Art Smith Arena in Alma. The Comets won the first (25-20) and third (25-22) sets, while the Scots won the second (27-25) and fourth (25-20) to force a deciding fifth set, which Olivet won 15-10.
The Comets led the first set 13-10 until Alma scored six of the next eight points to gain a 16-15 lead. Olivet came back with two straight kills to take the lead back 17-16 and did not relinquish it for the rest of the set.
The Scots led the second set before the Comets forced four straight times in the middle of the set. Olivet then took a three-point lead, 21-18. Alma battled back and with four consecutive points to go up 22-21. The teams traded points to create four more ties. After a final tied score at 25-25, two Scot kills provided the winning points.
The Comets returned the favor in the third set. With Alma holding a three-point lead, 17-14, Olivet reeled off a run to take a 22-19 lead. The Scots netted two straight points to cut their deficit to 22-21. The Comets scored three of the final four points to win the set.
A 5-0 Alma run in the middle of the fourth set turned a 13-12 Olivet lead into a 17-13 Scot lead. The Comets were able to come back and trail by only one point, 20-19 and 21-20. An Alma kill and three Olivet attack errors led to the winning points.
The Comets had a wire-to-wire lead in the fifth set. Olivet recorded their 15 points on seven kills and eight errors (six attack, one service and one set) by the Scots.
In the front row attack, the Comets had four players reach double figures in kills. Junior Re'Gene Thompson led the way with 14, followed by senior Marissa Guile, 12; sophomore Courtney Cronkright, 11; and sophomore Allison Turner, 10. Turner also had a match-high six block assists. Junior Danielle Bearden led the team with 43 set assists and 22 digs. Junior Mona Hinamanu was not far behind with 21 digs.
Olivet travels to play Calvin College next Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 6:30 p.m.
