Volleyball team loses home-opener to Albion
The Olivet College women’s volleyball team was swept by Albion College in three sets tonight at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet. The Britons won by scores of 25-21, 25-24 and 25-14.
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College women's volleyball team was swept by Albion College in three sets tonight in its home and Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet. The Britons won by scores of 25-21, 25-24 and 25-14.
The early stages of the first set was back-and-forth, with four tied scores. Albion built the largest lead for either team at 13-10. The Comets then went on a 6-0 scoring run to gain their own three-point lead at 16-13.
Olivet continued to lead until the Britons knotted the score three times, 19-19, 20-20 and 21-21. Two straight Albion aces, followed by two Comet attack errors ended the set in the Britons' favor.
Olivet had leads in the second set. Albion came back to take an 18-17 lead. The Comets tied the set, 20-20, before the Britons scored three straight points to go up 23-20. Olivet scored four of the next five points for a 24-24 tie. Two Comet errors led to the winning points for Albion.
Besides a 1-0 deficit, the Britons led the third set from start-to-finish. After getting down by as many as seven, 11-4, Olivet battled back to trail by only two points, 14-12. That would be the closest the Comets would get.
Junior Re'Gene Thompson paced Olivet's front row attack with 13 kills. Senior Marissa Guile joined her in double figures with 11 kills. Junior Danielle Bearden recorded a match-high 30 set assists. Junior libero Mona Hinamanu led all players with 26 digs.
The Comets will be right back in action tomorrow with a 3 p.m. league match at Alma College.
