Volleyball team falls in four sets to St. Norbert and five sets to Buena Vista

The Olivet College volleyball team dropped two matches this morning at the Elmhurst (Ill.) College Bluejay Classic inside the R.A. Faganel Hall in Elmhurst, Ill. The Comets lost a four-set match to St. Norbert (Wis.) College 25-14, 21-25, 25-18, 25-21, and then fell in five sets to Buena Vista (Iowa) University 23-25, 25-13, 25-19, 23-25, 15-8.

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Olivet College volleyball team dropped two matches this morning at the Elmhurst (Ill.) College Bluejay Classic inside the R.A. Faganel Hall in Elmhurst, Ill. The Comets lost a four-set match to St. Norbert (Wis.) College 25-14, 21-25, 25-18, 25-21, and then fell in five sets to Buena Vista (Iowa) University 23-25, 25-13, 25-19, 23-25, 15-8.

Against St. Norbert, senior Tina Westendorp (Nashville/Maple Valley) pounded down a match-high 14 kills. Freshman Ashlee Roussey (Ortonville/Ortonville-Brandon) had 12 kills with five errors on 28 attempts for a team-best .250 attack percentage. Freshman Danielle Bearden (Goodrich) topped the team with 35 set assists and 14 digs.

Against Buena Vista, Westendorp finished with a team-leading 16 kills. She had three errors on 46 attempts for a .283 hitting percentage. Roussey and freshman Cassie Brown (Lansing/Lansing Catholic) each recorded 12 kills. Bearden collected 40 set assists. Freshman Mona Hinamanu (Okemos/Mason) led the team with 17 digs.

The Comets will play a triangular at Trine (Ind.) University next Tuesday, Sept. 3. Olivet first plays the host Thunder in its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) opener at 4 p.m., followed by a non-conference match against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (Ind.).
