Volleyball team drops five-set match to Kalamazoo in season-finale
The Olivet College volleyball team dropped a five-set match to Kalamazoo College in its season-finale tonight at the Anderson Athletic Center in Kalamazoo. The Comets won the first two sets 25-17 and 25-21 before the Hornets rallied to win the next three 25-20, 26-24 and 15-12.
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Olivet College volleyball team dropped a five-set match to Kalamazoo College in its season-finale tonight at the Anderson Athletic Center in Kalamazoo. The Comets won the first two sets 25-17 and 25-21 before the Hornets rallied to win the next three 25-20, 26-24 and 15-12.
Olivet led the beginning of the first set until Kalamazoo turned an 11-5 deficit into a 14-12 lead with a 9-1 scoring run. The Comets came back to tie the set three times. After the last tie, 16-16, Olivet ended the set with its own 9-1 run to win it.
The Hornets had a lead for almost the whole second set until the Comets forced a 21-21 tie and then scored the final four points for a 25-21 win. Olivet appeared to take control of the third set, leading it by three points at 11-8. Kalamazoo came back by scoring eight of the next nine points to seize a 16-12 lead and did not give it up for the rest of the set.
The Hornets controlled the third set, building a six-point lead 19-13. The Comets scored seven straight points to take a 20-19 lead. Kalamazoo regained a two-point advantage, 24-22, only to have Olivet come back and tie the set, 24-24. A Comet service error and kill gave the Hornets the win and force the deciding set.
Olivet only led briefly in the fifth set, 4-3. From there, Kalamazoo had four straight points and never looked back.
The Comets hit above .200 in each of the sets they won, but hit below .150 in each of the three sets they lost. For the match, Olivet had a .160 attack percentage to a .222 attack percentage for the Hornets.
Junior Stefanie Lang (Valparaiso, Ind.) finished with a match-high 18 kills. Sophomore Emma Brann (Ann Arbor/Pioneer) and freshman Lydia Drikakis (Battle Creek/Lakeview) joined her in double digits with 15 and 10 kills, respectively.
At the service line, Lang served seven of the Comets' 13 aces. Brann and junior Tina Westendorp (Nashville/Maple Valley) each had two aces. Sophomore Taylor Pringle (Haslett) recorded 37 set assists. Four players reached double figures in digs, led by Westendorp's 17. Sophomore Megan VanderVlucht (McBain) was one behind with 16, followed by Drikakis (14) and Pringle (12).
