Volleyball team swept at Adrian in three close sets
The Olivet College volleyball team was swept in three close sets by Adrian College tonight at the Merillat Center in Adrian. The Bulldogs won by scores of 25-22, 25-21 and 25-22.
ADRIAN, Mich. – The Olivet College volleyball team was swept in three close sets by Adrian College tonight at the Merillat Center in Adrian. The Bulldogs won by scores of 25-22, 25-21 and 25-22.
Adrian led the first set 4-1 before the Comets rallied to tie it 7-7. Olivet then went on a 9-2 scoring run to take its largest lead of the set 16-9. The Bulldogs clawed their way back to make the score 20-20. After one last tie at 21-21, Adrian scored four of the last five points to win the set, 25-22.
The teams traded leads in the early stages of the set, with the Comets leading three points, 7-4 and Bulldogs leading by four points, 13-9. Olivet came back and eventually tied the set at 20-20. But like the first set, Adrian closed the set with a 5-1 run to win it, 25-21.
The Comets led the third set 10-7. The Bulldogs battled back and took a three 1-point leads (12-11, 13-12, 14-13) lead before Olivet scored three straight points to go up 16-14. The Comet held that two-point until Adrian went on a 6-0 run to take a 20-16 lead, and it did not give the lead for the rest of the set.
Junior Stefanie Lang (Valparaiso, Ind.) finished with a single-match, career-high 13 kills. She had only three attack errors on 22 attempts for a .455 hitting percentage. Lang also served two aces.
Freshman Lydia Drikakis (Battle Creek/Lakeview) and sophomore Emma Brann (Ann Arbor/Pioneer) recorded nine and seven kills, respectively. Freshman Marissa Guile (Williamston) had five kills, with one error on 12 attempts for .333 attack percentage.
Sophomore Taylor Pringle (Haslett) dished out a team-leading 28 assists. Sophomore libero Megan VanderVlucht (McBain) collected a single-match, season-high 21 digs. Junior Tina Westendorp (Nashville/Maple Valley) also reached double figures in digs with 12.
Olivet will travel to Delaware, Ohio, for two non-conference matches Friday night. At 5:30 p.m., the Comets will play Carlow (Pa.) University and after that match, they will play Oberlin (Ohio) College.
