Volleyball team has 1-1 record at Kalamazoo Green Hornet Invitational
The volleyball team had a 1-1 record today at the Kalamazoo College Green Hornet Invitational. The Comets lost in five sets to Baldwin-Wallace (Ohio) and then bounced back to sweep the host Hornets in three sets.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Olivet College volleyball team had a 1-1 record today at the Kalamazoo College Green Hornet Invitational. The Comets lost in five sets (22-25, 25-15, 25-18, 18-25, 9-15) to Baldwin-Wallace (Ohio) College and then bounced back to sweep the host Hornets in three sets (25-22, 27-25, 25-19). For her efforts this weekend, sophomore Sam Gibson (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) was named to the all-tournament team.
"I am pleased with the start to our season," said first-year Head Coach Lynnette Moster. "It was nice to get a win against a MIAA opponent today. We had some players step up and play really well this weekend. Now, we are looking forward to the start of league play and seeing what we can do."
Against B-W, junior Jordy Bergeron (Muskegon/Mona Shores) pounded down 22 kills. She had only four attack errors on 56 attempts for a .321 hitting percentage. Gibson posted 15 kills and .229 attack percentage. Sophomore Cassie McDonald (Battle Creek/Pennfield) and senior Jenessa Hicks (Union City) finished with 20 and 19 set assists, respectively. Junior libero Mallory Schug (Climax/Galesburg Augusta) led the defense with 22 digs.
Against Kalamazoo, Gibson contributed nine kills to give her 44 for the tournament. Sophomore Melanie Merchant (St. Joseph) and senior Ellen Schulz (Freeland) each had seven kills. Hicks led the team with 11 assists and 13 digs.
Olivet will open Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play next Tuesday, Sept. 7, at Trine (Ind.) University. Action inside Hershey Hall starts at 6:30 p.m.
