BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – The Olivet College women's tennis team concluded its 2016 season with a 9-0 setback to Hope College this afternoon at the Minges Creek Athletic Club in Battle Creek. With the win, the Flying Dutch clinched the 2016 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championship with a perfect 8-0 league record.
The Comets' No. 1 team of sophomore Maddy Drikakis and freshman Rachael Hager, and No. 2 duo of senior Haley Powers and sophomore BreAnne Rudlaff both lost 8-2 pro-sets. In singles, Drikakis won four total games in a 6-3, 6-1 loss at No. 2. Rudlaff lost her first set 6-3, and then fell 6-0 in the second set at No. 4. Senior Jeanette Fisher dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 6.
"The 2016 will go down as one of the best in school history," said Olivet Head Coach Andrew Debruyn. "The women broke the single-season record for MIAA wins. We look forward to next year, as our recruiting class for next year should help create some competition within the team and lead us to another great season."
The 2016-17 season will start in September with four or five non-conference matches. The Comets will then play a mix of MIAA and non-league matches in the spring, starting in late February.
Before today's match, the Comets recognized their three seniors -- Powers, Fisher and Lydia Drikakis -- who played their final collegiate tennis match.
