Women’s tennis team defeats Trine, 5-4, for third straight win
The Olivet College women’s tennis team defeated Trine (Ind.) University, 5-4, this afternoon at Fremont High School in Fremont, Indiana. The Comets improve their overall record to 7-7 and have won three straight matches, all against MIAA opponents. In addition, the three conference wins this season match the 2007 team for the most in a season in school history.
FREMONT, Ind. – The Olivet College women's tennis team defeated Trine (Ind.) University, 5-4, this afternoon at Fremont High School in Fremont, Indiana. The Comets improve their overall record to 7-7 and have won three straight matches, all against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opponents. In addition, the three conference wins this season match the 2007 team for the most in a season in school history.
Olivet got off to a fast start by winning two of three doubles flights. Freshman Rachael Hager and sophomore Maddy Drikakis won an 8-3 pro-set at the No. 1 slot. Sophomores Haley Powers and BreAnne Rudlaff cruised to an 8-2 win at No. 2.
Senior Jeanette Fisher lost only two total games for an easy 6-2, 6-0 straight set victory at No. 6 singles and put the Comets ahead 3-1. The Thunder closed the gap when Madison Hatkevich won at No. 2 singles.
Rudlaff earned Olivet's fourth team point with a three-set win, 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. A three-set victory at No. 1 singles for Trine made the score 4-3. Freshman Rae Claramunt clinched the Comets' win at No. 5 singles moments before the No. 3 singles match was won by the Thunder. Claramunt lost her first set, 6-4, before rallying to win the next two, 6-4 and 6-3.
Olivet is now off for the rest of the week to prepare for and take spring semester final examinations. The Comets then return to the tennis court Saturday with a 1 p.m. match against Calvin College. Weather permitting, the match will be played outdoors at the Battle Creek Country Club. The rain location is Minges Creek Athletic Club in Battle Creek.
