Women’s tennis team snaps long MIAA losing streak with 5-4 win at Adrian
The Olivet College women’s tennis team beat Adrian College, 5-4, this afternoon at the Craft Tennis Complex in Adrian. With the win, the Comets snapped a 34-match losing streak against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opponents. Olivet’s last win against a league foe was a 7-2 decision at Trine (Ind.) University on April 19, 2011.
ADRIAN, Mich. – The Olivet College women's tennis team beat Adrian College, 5-4, this afternoon at the Craft Tennis Complex in Adrian. With the win, the Comets snapped a 34-match losing streak against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opponents. Olivet's last win against a league foe was a 7-2 decision at Trine (Ind.) University on April 19, 2011.
The Comets won two-of-three doubles flights to take a 2-1 lead into the start of singles play. The No. 1 duo of freshman Rachael Hager and sophomore Maddy Drikakis rolled to an 8-1 win. Sophomores Haley Powers and BreAnne Rudlaff posted an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles.
Olivet opened a 4-1 lead when Hager and Drikakis dominated their opponents in singles play. Hager lost only one total in a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 1 position. Drikakis cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the No. 2 slot. The Bulldogs tied the match at 4-4 with wins at No. 3, 4 and 5 singles.
The only match left on the court was the No. 6 singles match between Comet senior Jeanette Fisher and Adrian's Olivia Neumann. After getting down early in the first set, Fisher rallied to win it, 7-5. Fisher was up 4-1 in the second set before Neumann won two games to make it 4-3. Fisher then answered by winning two games to claim the set, 6-4 and hand the team victory to Olivet, 5-4.
The Comets will host Albion College Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. If the weather permits, the match will be played outdoors at the Battle Creek Country Club. If not, the match will be moved indoors to the Minges Creek Athletic Club.
