FREELAND, Mich. – Olivet College freshman Katie Rush has been selected the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Defensive Player of the Week for women's soccer.
The starting right back, Rush helped the Comets open their MIAA schedule with two wins last week. On Sept. 6, the Comets defeated Saint Mary's (Ind.) College, 4-0, and she held the Belles' leading scorer to zero goals and four shots. Rush then helped Olivet beat Alma College, 4-1, on Sept. 9.
"Katie has stepped in as a freshman and earned her position as our starting right back," said Olivet head women's soccer coach Sarah Maracani. "She gives 110 percent every time she steps onto the field. Last week, Katie did a great job at holding the MIAA and national offensive player of the week to zero goals and limited shots. She also plays a big role in starting our attack from the right side and she did a great job with that. Overall, our backline played fantastic defense and Katie was a standout with her efforts."
Olivet hosts Hope College in a battle of unbeaten teams this afternoon. Game time at the Cutler Athletic Complex is 4 p.m.
