ALMA, Mich. – Sophomore Emily Reinecke scored a penalty kick goal only 1:30 into the game, and the Olivet College women's soccer team hung on to beat Alma College, 1-0, this afternoon at Scotland Yard in Alma.
The Comets came out of the gate ready to play. One minute and thirty seconds into the half, sophomore Isabelle Leon found the ball at her feet for a one-on-one opportunity. Alma's goalkeeper came out and fouled Leon in the box. Reinecke took the penalty kick and buried it left corner to put the Comets up 1-0.
Olivet looked to keep possession after its goal. With momentum going their way players like freshman Emma Essen and sophomore Madeline Maxwell were able to add shots to the mix for the Comets. Olivet ended the first half with five solid shots on goal with a break away by Leon in the final ten seconds just missing the inside post.
The second half was equally matched by both teams. Alma had opportunities throughout the period, but failed to capitalize on any of them. The Comets were held without a goal in the second half despite testing the keeper with shots.
Senior Deanna Zolnoski played all 90 minutes in goal and had a total of five saves. This win was her seventh shutout of the season and the 16th of her career.
The Comets return to the pitch next Wednesday, Oct. 21, when they host MIAA leader Hope College. Game time at the Cutler Athletic Complex is 4 p.m.
