ADRIAN, Mich. – The Olivet College women's soccer team tied Adrian College, 0-0, in double overtime in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association game tonight at Docking Stadium in Adrian.
The first half was evenly played by both teams. The Bulldogs had more opportunities, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.
Coming out of halftime, the Comets looked to move the ball around and try to get past the Bulldog defense. Senior Amber Hamad, freshman Emma Essen, and sophomores Madeline Maxwell and Isabelle Leon all put shots up for Olivet.
With a foul called around the 30-yard mark, senior Megan Peplinski came up to take the kick. With a perfectly placed ball, the Comets looked like they had their goal but a deflection by the Bulldog defense knocked the ball out.
Peplinski and senior Jeanette Fisher held down the Comet defense, leaving the Bulldogs shots on-goal to a minimum in the second half. Olivet ended the second 45 minutes of play with a total of six shots on-goal.
At the start of the first overtime period, the Comets dominated finding shots and keeping possession moving around the Bulldog defense to create opportunities. Olivet's best chance came from senior Lauren Vanderhoff who found herself in a one-on-one situation. The Bulldogs goalkeeper came up strong with a great save to keep the game tied at 0-0 and to send the game into a second overtime.
Neither team was able to convert on a goal in the second overtime stanza.
Senior Deanna Zolnoski played all 110 minutes in net for the Comets, coming up big with six saves to preserve the shutout.
The Comets make the trip to South Bend to play Saint Mary's College Saturday morning at noon. Due to construction on a new field at Saint Mary's, the game will be played at the Jr. Irish Soccer Club – Airport Field #6.
