OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College women's soccer team defeated Kalamazoo College, 2-0, today in its Homecoming game at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
Although it was cold rainy day, the Comets were able to possess the ball and find opportunities up top. Olivet was banging the ball around, looking for wings which work well to get around the Hornet defense. The Comets' first goal came late in the first half in the 38th minute when sophomore Madeline Maxwell knocked a shot in top left corner. Despite not seeing amount of shots Kalamazoo did, Olivet put away the opportunities it was given.
The second half proved to be much like the first half. With outside backs senior Jordyn Mackool and sophomore Alexis Lothamer making overlapping runs, Olivet had more chances getting forward. In the 59th minute, the Hornets gained a corner kick which was cleared out to sophomore Isabelle Leon. She then dribbled up the left wing and sent a pass over to freshman Emma Essen who put the ball just past the Kalamazoo keeper and put the Comets up 2-0. Olivet looked to possess after the second goal, allowing them to bang the ball around and tire out the Hornets.
Senior Deanna Zolnoski played all 90 minutes in goal to earn her fifth shutout of the season.
The Comets start their second round of Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play next week, as they travel to Adrian College on Wednesday. Game time from Docking Stadium is 7 p.m.
