ANGOLA, Ind. – The Olivet College women's soccer team shutout the Trine (Ind.) University Thunder, 2-0, today at Weaver Field in Angola, Indiana.
The Comets started off the first half strong, finding feet, making runs through, and slotting the ball. Although the Thunder was possessing when they had opportunities, they could not find the net like Olivet. Eighteen minutes into the first half, sophomore Isabelle Leon had the ball played to her feet when she then found freshman Emma Essen for the give and go which led the Comets to their first goal. Leon played the ball just past the keeper to the bottom left corner.
Olivet did not put its foot on the brake though. With the high pressure the Comets were putting on Trine, they caught them on their heels when senior Megan Peplinski took a big step forward in the defensive line and dribbled all the way to the net where she put one in the low corner which bounced off of the post and into the net in the 28th minute to put Olivet up 2-0.
Coming out in the second half, Olivet sat back a bit more and just looked to possess the ball. This strategy allowed the Comets to sub their wings, and make runs to goal when needed. Olivet ended the second half with 18 shots on-goal to Trine's eight. Key players adding to this total were senior Amber Hamad who put up three, and freshman McKenna Graham who had two.
Senior Deanna Zolnoski played all 90 minutes in goal for the Comets and finished with her fourth shutout of the season.
Olivet takes on Albion College this Saturday at approximately 2:30 p.m. at the Cutler Athletic Complex. Preceding the women's game, the Comet men's soccer team battles Calvin College at noon.
