OLIVET, Mich. -- The Olivet College women's soccer team hosted Heidelberg (Ohio) for its second out of conference game and ended the match with a 2-0 win.
Although the game started off slow, Olivet was maintaining possession throughout the half with 13 shots on goal in the first 45 minutes to Heildelberg's three. Sophomores Miranda Quick, Emily Reinecke and Madeline Maxwell all helped keep the intensity up for Olivet with shots on goal in the first half.
The Comets first goal of the game came from sophomore Isabelle Leon at the 15 minute mark. The goal was unassisted from 10 yards out. The shot curved near post to put the Comets up by one going into halftime.
Olivet came out strong in the second half playing above and beyond what it had showed in the first half. With possession in their favor for most of the half, the Comets were able to put up another 10 shots. With their defense staying organized and finding their wings wide, it opened up a lot of opportunity for crosses in the second half.
Olivet's second goal came from a cross in the 78th minute from sophomore Alexis Lothamer which was flicked by Reinecke to the feet of freshman Lydia Vargas for a shot 10 yards out. She put away her shot at the far post.
Senior Deanna Zolnoski ended her second game in goal with a shutout. She had three saves to keep the Comets ahead. Olivet ended the game with a total of 23 shots on goal to Heidelberg's seven.
The Comets now open Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at home against Adrian College. Game time is 4 p.m.
