OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College women's soccer team opened Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play with a heartbreaking 3-2 double overtime loss to Adrian College today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
Adrian took a 1-0 lead at halftime behind a goal by Ellery Karsten in the 40th minute. The Comets tied the game five minutes and 32 seconds into the second half. Freshman Emily Reinecke had her shot stopped by the goalkeeper. Freshman Isabelle Leon gathered the ball and sent a short pass to senior Brooke Leach who buried her shot into an open net.
With a little less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, the Bulldogs regained the lead on a goal by Lauren Badalmente. Olivet answered with the equalizer only two minutes and 55 seconds later. Leach passed the ball into the box, where Leon's header hit off the near post and into the goal.
The Comets had the only scoring chance in the first overtime period when Reinecke's shot sailed right of the goal. Adrian had a chance to score early in the second overtime session but Olivet junior keeper Deanna Zolnoski saved the shot. With 1:43 left in the extra period, Erin Weide scored the game-winning goal for the Bulldogs.
For the game, Olivet had 12 shots, with seven being placed on-goal. Reinecke led the way with four shots. Zolnoski faced 23 shots and made eight saves, while playing the entire game in goal.
The Comets (2-1-1, 0-1 MIAA) travel to play Kalamazoo College Saturday afternoon at noon.
