OLIVET, Mich. – Senior Nicole Borek scored from 25 yards out in overtime to lift the Olivet College women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over North Park (Ill.) University this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
The Vikings used a lucky bounce to take a 1-0 lead with 11 seconds left before halftime. The Comets had a couple chances early in the second half to tie the game but the equalizer finally came in the 65th minute. Borek chipped the ball into the six-yard box, where freshman Emily Reinecke tapped the ball over a charging keeper.
Olivet was the aggressive team in the overtime period. Reinecke had two shots just sail wide of the goal. Freshman Rachael Durocher had her breakaway shot clang off the far post, and junior Lauren Vanderhoff's shot was saved by the goalkeeper. With around a minute left in the extra period, a North Park player was called for a foul. Borek took the free kick and slipped a shot past the goalie at the near post.
The Comets were out-shot 8-4 in the first half, but rebounded to out-shoot the Vikings, 9-4 in the second half and 5-0 in the overtime period. Overall, Olivet had an 18-12 advantage in total shots. Reinecke led the way with seven, followed by Borek with three. Junior Deanna Zolnoski started in net and allowed the first-half goal. Sophomore Kori Ramirez picked-up the victory in net.
