KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Olivet College women's soccer team lost a heartbreaker to Kalamazoo College 1-0 in double overtime on a rainy night under the lights at MacKenzie Field in Kalamazoo. The Hornets scored their goal with seven seconds left off a free kick from 30 yards out.
The Comets' best chance to score in the first half came in the 36th minute. Using her left foot, senior Lindsey Winters (Plymouth/Canton) ripped a shot from about 25 yards out towards the net. The keeper needed to use her right hand to punch the ball over the crossbar. Olivet had a good scoring opportunity in the 80th minute. Off a corner kick by Winters, sophomore Jordyn Mackool (Berkley) had her shot saved by the keeper.
Neither team had a shot in the first overtime period. In the second overtime, the Hornets had a couple chances to score, including one shot which was saved off the back line by a Comet defender. Olivet's best chance was in the seventh minute of the extra session when freshman Kelsey Dietzen's (Lansing/East Lansing) shot was stopped by the keeper. In the final seconds of the overtime, a Comet was called for a foul, setting-up the free kick which was scored.
For the game, Olivet had five shots, placing all five on-goal and five different players each recording one. Sophomore Deanna Zolnoski (Macomb/Henry Ford II) faced 13 shots and made seven saves.
The Comets host Hope College Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
NOTES: Tonight's game was the reverse from the first meeting between the two schools earlier this season. On Sept. 14, Olivet beat Kalamazoo, 1-0, on a goal in the first 45 seconds of the game. For the second straight year, the Comets lost to the Hornets in double overtime.
