Wrestling: Three advance to semifinals, Olivet in sixth-place after day one of NCAA Division III Central Regional

ADA, Ohio – Three members of The University of Olivet wrestling team have advanced to the semifinals to help the Comets sit in sixth-place after the first day of the 2024 NCAA Division III Central Regional, hosted by Ohio Northern University and at the ONU Sports Center.
- Senior Dylan Phelps at 141 pounds, junior Tyler Herrema at 149 pounds and senior Donovan King at 285 pounds each posted a 2-0 record to advance to the semifinals in their respective weight class.
- Phelps' wins were an 18-2 technical fall in the first round and an 11-2 major decision in the quarterfinals. He will face top-seed Jacob Reed from Ohio Northern in the semifinals.
- Herrerma won a 19-4 technical fall in the first round and eked out a 5-3 decision in the quarterfinals. He will wrestle third-seed Max Honnis from Albion College in the semifinals.
- King had two first-period pins, 1:16 in the first round and 1:41 in the quarterfinals. He will face Mason Slocum from Adrian College in the semifinals.
- Four other Comets are still alive in the consolation bracket and are guaranteed a top-eight finish. Those wrestlers are junior Emmett Kettel at 125 pounds, junior Ramiro Gurrero at 157 pounds, freshman Juwan Vines at 184 pounds and junior Kody Krupp at 197 pounds.
- Olivet has recorded 70.5 points. Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) University is in first place with 108.5 points. Wabash (Ind.) College is second with 93.5 points, followed by Ohio Northern (87.5), Adrian College (82.0) and Albion College (75.0).
- 125: Emmett Kettel – 2-1 record – lost 13-1 major decision to Cade Odrobina (Albion), pinned Jordan Miller (Mount St. Joseph, Ohio) in 2:05, won 12-3 major decision over Nasir Christion (Manchester, Ind.).
- 133: Emilio Cabrera – 0-2 record – lost 17-3 major decision to Desmond Diggs (Mount St. Joseph, Ohio), lost 17-6 major decision to Ty Daugherty (John Carroll, Ohio).
- 141: Dylan Phelps – 2-0 record – won 18-2 technical fall (3:42) over Will Brodbeck (Hiram, Ohio), won 11-1 major decision over Robert Palmieri (Baldwin Wallace, Ohio).
- 149: Tyler Herrema – 2-0 record – won 19-4 technical fall (2:49) over Chris Davis (Muskingum, Ohio), won 5-3 decision over Calvin Cai (Case Western Reserve, Ohio).
- 157: Ramiro Guerrero – 2-1 record – won 12-5 decision over Justin Gorman (Albion), pinned by Patrick McGraw (John Carroll, Ohio) in 4:15, won 16-1 technical fall over Owen Atienza (Alma).
- 165: Jay Shaull – 1-2 record – pinned by Teagan Hendricks (Ohio Northern) in 5:00, pinned Wills Bronson (John Carroll, Ohio) in 5:31, lost 16-2 major decision to James Bettcher (Manchester, Ind.).
- 174: Mitchell Reynolds – 1-2 record – won 16-1 technical fall (6:11) over Jimmy Thomas (Hiram, Ohio), lost 5-2 decision to Carter Lloyd (Baldwin Wallace, Ohio), lost 11-2 major decision to TJ Rhamy (Heidelberg, Ohio).
- 184: Juwan Vines – 2-1 record – won 13-2 major decision over Mathew Gummere (Case Western Reserve, Ohio), lost 9-0 major decision to Charles Baczek (Wabash, Ind.), won 14-2 major decision over Desmon Perry (Ohio Wesleyan).
- 197: Kody Krupp – 2-1 record – pinned by Jackson Beck-Calvert (Adrian) in 1:39, won 16-0 technical fall (5:04) over Ethan Skinner (Manchester, Ind.), won 10-1 major decision over Kaleb Gelter (Mount St. Joseph, Ohio).
- 285: Donovan King – 2-0 record – pinned Edward Powers (Hiram, Ohio) in 1:16, pinned Demetrius Hernandez (Heidelberg, Ohio) in 1:41.
- Action resumes tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. The top three placers in each of the 10 weight classes will receive a trip to the 2024 NCAA Division III Championships March 15-16, at the La Crosse Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
