Wrestling: Olivet splits two matches at 2024 NWCA National Dual Meet Championships

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The University of Olivet wrestling team split two matches on day two of the 2024 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Multi-Division National Dual Meet Championships at the UNI Dome. After falling to Rochester Institute of Technology (N.Y.), 38-13, in their first match, the Comets bounced back to defeat Marymount (Va.) University, 47-3.
- The Tigers claimed wins in 7-of-10 bouts, earning bonus points in each of the seven wins.
- Senior Dylan Phelps scored a late takedown to seal a 5-1 win at 141 pounds.
- Junior Kody Krupp won a high-scoring 184-pound bout, 18-10. His points consisted of three takedowns (one in each period), a two-point near-fall, a four-point near-fall, two escape points and the riding time point.
- Senior Donovan King posted a forfeit win at 285 pounds.
- The Comets had no trouble recording the lopsided win, as they won 9-of-10 bouts and scored bonus points in all the wins.
- Junior Emmett Kettel got the match started with a forfeit victory at 125 pounds.
- After a close loss in the 133-pound bout, Olivet had back-to-back technical fall wins by junior Robert Davids (15-0) at 141 pounds and sophomore Darren McLeod (16-0) at 149 pounds.
- Junior Jay Shaull had the fastest pin of the bout, 2:17, at 157 pounds.
- At 165 pounds, senior Gabe Guerrero shut out his opponent, 11-0.
- Senior Mitchell Reynolds doubled up his opponent, 20-10, at 174 pounds.
- Sophomore Gideon Loewen won by a fall with 16 seconds remaining in the second period.
- Krupp bumped up one weight class to 197 pounds and pinned his opponent in the first period at 2:28.
- King used a takedown and 15 near-fall points in the first period to win 18-0.
- Olivet returns home to wrestle Henry Ford College next Sunday, January 14, starting at 1 p.m.
