Wrestling: Four Comets win weight class titles at SC4 Skipper Open
December 9, 2023
PORT HURON, Mich. – Four members of The University of Olivet wrestling team finished first in their weight class at the St. Clair County Community College Skipper Open today inside the SC4 Fieldhouse.
- The meet was unscored. Due to the low number of wrestlers, the open was a round-robin bracket for each nine of the 10 weight classes. The 174-pound bracket was a traditional bracket, as there were enough wrestlers to fill an 8-man ledger.
- Four Comets captured their respective weight class title. They were senior Dylan Phelps at 141 pounds, sophomore Darren McLeod at 149, junior Kody Krupp at 184 and freshman Justin Kephart at 285 pounds.
- Olivet also had a pair of runner-up finishers – junior Jay Shaull at 157 and freshman Branson Goodman at 197.
- Phelps pinned his only contested opponent in 1:54. His other two wins were forfeits.
- McLeod won each of his four matches by technical fall, outscoring his opponents 69-6.
- Krupp won his first match with a first-period pin in 2:02 and followed that with a 13-9 decision victory. His third win was a forfeit.
- Kephart went 2-0 with a first-period pin in 1:21 and a 16-1 technical fall.
- Olivet competes next Saturday, December 16, at the 2023 Kalahari Duals, hosted by Heidelberg (Ohio) University and inside the Kalahari Resorts & Convention Center in Sandusky, Ohio. The Comets wrestle against Augustana (Ill.) College, Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College, Delaware Valley (Pa.) University and Waynesburg (Pa.) University. The first round against Augustana starts at 10 a.m.
