Wrestling: Herrema wins 149-pound title, Olivet finishes sixth at ONU Invitational

ADA, Ohio – Junior Tyler Herrema won the 149-pound title to lead the University of Olivet wrestling team to sixth-place finish at the 42nd Annual Ohio Northern University Polar Bear Invitational today at the ONU Sports Center.
- The Comets totaled 99 points, with seven wrestlers finishing in the top seven of their respective weight class.
- Tiffin (Ohio) University captured the team title with 219 points, followed by the host Polar Bears in second (166.5), University of Dubuque (Iowa) in third (113.5), Heidelberg (Ohio) University in fourth (105) and Adrian College in fifth (100.5).
- Herrema defeated Elijah Hunter from Tiffin, 14-3, in the championship match. He started the day with a 20-4 technical fall over Iain Escobar from Tiffin, pinned Jaizik Sanabria from Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) in the first period and won 5-0 over Darian Diaz from Dubuque (Iowa) and 7-1 over Bryce Rodriguez-Uram from Washington & Jefferson to reach the championship bout.
- At 141 pounds, junior Robert Davids placed third. He began his day with back-to-back major decision wins, 11-0 and 16-2, before winning 8-4 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Davids fell in overtime. He pinned his first opponent in the consolation bracket and took the third-place match via a no contest.
- At 285 pounds, junior Boe Eckman was fourth. He had back-to-back first-period pins in his first two matches. Eckman was pinned in his third match but bounced back to win three straight matches (3-0, 7-1 and 8-3) in the consolation bracket. He could not wrestle the third-place bout due to having wrestled six matches already.
- Finishing fifth were sophomore Darren McLeod at 149 pounds and freshman Kyan Larson at 165 pounds.
- At 184 pounds, senior Michael Minne finished sixth.
- Freshman Juwan Vines was seventh at 165 pounds.
- Olivet participates in the St. Clair County Community College Open next Saturday, December 9. Action from the SC4 Fieldhouse gets under way at 11 a.m.
