Wrestling team defeats Trine, 38-6, to clinch share of MIAA title
The Olivet College wrestling team continued its pursuit of the 2020 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) championship by defeating Trine (Ind.) University, 38-6, this evening at Hershey Hall in Angola, Indiana. With the win, the Comets secured at least a share of the MIAA title.

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Olivet College wrestling team continue its pursuit of the 2020 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) championship by defeating Trine (Ind.) University, 38-6, this evening at Hershey Hall in Angola, Indiana. With the win, the Comets secured at least a share of the MIAA title.

- The Comets, ranked No. 16 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) poll released earlier today, won 9-of-10 bouts.
- Olivet scored bonus points in six of the bouts.
- The Thunder's lone win was a pin in the 184-pound bout.
- At 125 pounds, junior Cameron Mahlich got the match started with 16-1 technical fall at the 4:02 mark.
- At 133 pounds, sophomore Reese Wallis posted a 12-3 major decision.
- At 141 pounds, senior Andrew Castaneda won 5-1.
- At 149 pounds, senior Drew Mandell wasted no time in pinning his opponent in 33 seconds.
- At 157 pounds, junior Cole Hersch pinned his man just over a minute into the second period.
- At 165 pounds, freshman Owen Guilford hung on for a 9-5 win.
- At 174 pounds, senior Haydn Kinjorski earned a 5-1 decision victory.
- At 197 pounds, junior Trevor Piggott claimed a 13-5 major decision win.
- At 285 pounds, sophomore Dominick Wilson shutout his opponent, 9-0, scoring seven of the points in the second period.
- Olivet now has an 18-1 all-time record against Trine.
- The Comets won 12 straight dual matches against the Thunder.
- "After a big weekend, I thought we might have a little bit of letdown. But we did not do that tonight. We had a dominating performance and looked great in all positions. The seniors stepped up and gave us some great bonus-point wins when they were in total control of their matches. Our team continues to grow in its confidence and we are excited to host the final conference dual meet next Thursday against rival Alma.
- Olivet will send a mix of varsity and backup wrestlers to compete Saturday at the Alma College Open.
