Mandell selected MIAA Wrestler of the Week
Olivet College junior Drew Mandell has been selected the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Wrestler of the Week.
FREELAND, Mich. – Olivet College junior Drew Mandell has been selected the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Wrestler of the Week.
Wrestling at 149 pounds, Mandell had a 4-0 record for the Comets at the 2019 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Multi-Divisional National Duals Jan. 4 at the Kentucky Expo Center in Louisville. Three of his wins were pins – 3:30 over Joe Paul from Johns Hopkins (Md.), 0:39 over Slade Todd from Heidelberg (Ohio) and 1:59 over Bernard Casella from Wis.-Whitewater. In his fourth win, Mandell rallied from a 6-0 deficit for a 12-8 decision over Demetri D'Oraseno from Ithaca (N.Y.).
For the season, Mandell has a 16-1 record. Eleven of his wins have been pins, and eight have been recorded in the first period.
The Comets welcome Trine (Ind.) University Thunder to the Cutler Event Center for their first MIAA dual match of the season. Action gets under way at 7 p.m. Before the match, Olivet will recognize its two senior wrestlers.
