FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Olivet College wrestling team stands in fifth-place after the first day of the 2017 NCAA Division III Midwest Regional at the War Allen Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Comets have nine-of-10 wrestlers still alive in the tournament.
- Four of the nine will wrestle tomorrow morning in the semifinals. All four need only a win in the semis to be guaranteed a trip to the NCAA DIII National Championships.
- These four wrestlers are senior Michael Schmidt at 125 pounds, senior Austin Kelley at 149 pounds, sophomore Tyler Grimsley at 174 pounds and senior Jesse Judge at 285 pounds.
- Schmidt won his first match 12-2 over Moe Mitchell from North Central and then slipped past Seth Transue from Ohio Northern, 4-2, in the quarterfinals.
- Kelley posted back-to-back shutout wins, 5-0 over Jake Davis from Wis.-Whitewater and 8-0 over Caleb Ramos from Elmhurst.
- Grimsley had a bye in the first round and then beat Austin Farrell from Trine, 7-6.
- Judge defeated Gage Archer from Otterbein, 11-7, and pinned Konrad Ernst from Wis.-La Crosse in the first period at 2:50.
- The other five – junior Jared Brickley at 133 pounds, senior Curtis Blackwell at 141 pounds, junior Davon Jackson at 165 pounds, senior Rodney Harvey at 184 pounds and senior Kyle Carter at 197 pounds – are in the consolation bracket.
