Wrestling team celebrates Senior Night with 29-15 win over Adrian
The Olivet College wrestling team celebrated Senior Night with a 29-15 win over Adrian College tonight in a dual match inside The Cutler Event Center in Olivet. The Comets, ranked No. 25 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, scored bonus points in five on their six wins.
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College wrestling team celebrated Senior Night with a 29-15 win over Adrian College tonight in a dual match inside The Cutler Event Center in Olivet. The Comets, ranked No. 25 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, scored bonus points in five on their six wins.
Junior Michael Schmidt got the match started with a 10-0 major decision at 125 pounds. Sophomore Jared Brickley used a takedown with 30 seconds left in the third period to win the 133-pound bout, 3-1.
At 141 pounds, junior Curtis Blackwell trailed by a 10-3 score and was in the down position to start the third period. He quickly scored a reversal and then took his man to his back for the fall only 16 seconds into the period.
The Bulldogs trimmed their deficit to four points, 13-9, with an 8-5 decision at 149 pounds and pin at 157 pounds. Freshman Tyler Grimsley scored 12 takedowns to post a 28-13 technical fall win at 165 pounds.
Behind four four-point near falls, senior Nicholas Africano won an 18-0 technical fall at 174 pounds and push Olivet's lead to 23-9. Adrian won a 6-4 decision at 184 pounds.
At 197 pounds, senior Thomas Hall battled undefeated and nationally-ranked Angus Arthur for the entire bout, falling by a 4-3 score. Arthur scored a takedown in the first period but Hall was able to get out to make the score 2-1. In the up position to start the second period, Hall put Arthur on his back for a two-point near fall. Arthur scored the escape point to tie the match, 3-3. Hall went to the down position to start the third period. Arthur was able to ride him out for the entire period, earning the riding time point to win the bout.
In the last bout of the night at 285 pounds, senior Youssef El-Sayed brought the crowd to their feet. He scored a quick takedown and then tilted his opponent for the pin only 44 seconds into the bout.
The Comets are now off until Saturday, Feb. 12, when they compete at the 2016 Mid-States Conference Tournament. Ohio Northern University is the host school, and the tournament gets started at 9 a.m.
