Wrestling team opens season at EMU Duals
The Olivet College wrestling team faced what will be some of its toughest competition of the year in its season-opening matches today at the Eastern Michigan University Duals.
YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Olivet College wrestling team faced what will be some of its toughest competition of the year in its season-opening matches today at the Eastern Michigan University Duals. The Comets were defeated by Edinboro (Pa.) University, 46-3, University of Illinois, 42-3, Kent State (Ohio) University, 46-6, and Ohio University, 46-3.
Against Edinboro, sophomore Jared Brickley picked-up Olivet's only win, an 8-2 decision at 133 pounds. He used a takedown and four-point near-fall in the final seven seconds of the bout to break a 2-2 tie.
Against Illinois, junior Michael Schmidt earned the Comets' win, a 9-5 decision at 125 pounds. With the score tied at 5-5 late in the bout, he scored the final four points of the bout on an escape, takedown and riding time point.
Against Kent State, junior Youssef El-Sayed provided Olivet's team points with a pin at 285 pounds. The wrestlers traded reversals at the start of the third period. After El-Sayed scored another reversal to go up 4-3 with 59 seconds left, he recorded the fall 23 seconds later and with 36 ticks remaining in the bout.
Against Ohio, junior Rodney Harvey had the Comets' win, a 6-1 decision, at 184 pounds. He got a takedown in the first period and an escape to go up 3-0. After allowing an escape midway through the third period, Harvey scored a late takedown to also secure the riding time point.
The Comets return to the mat next Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Trine (Ind.) University Invitational and next Sunday, Nov. 15, at the Michigan State Open.
