Wrestling: Allen eliminated at NCAA National Championships
Olivet College senior Nick Allen lost both of his matches today at the 2015 NCAA Division III National Wrestling Championships, held inside the Giant Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
HERSHEY, Pa. – Olivet College senior Nick Allen lost both of his matches today at the 2015 NCAA Division III National Wrestling Championships, held inside the Giant Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
Wrestling at 174 pounds, Allen dropped a tough 9-7 sudden death decision to No. 8 seed Garrett Chase from Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) University in his first match. Allen scored the only two points in the first period on a takedown with 28 seconds left. The two wrestlers traded reversals in the first minute of the second period before Chase scored an escape point late in the period to trail 4-3 entering the final period.
Like the first period, Allen and Chase both had reversals early in the third period to keep the score at 6-5. Allen got out to get an escape point to go up 7-5 with nine seconds left. Chase quickly took Allen down for two-point takedown two seconds later to tie the match at 7-7.
There was no scoring in the first overtime period and neither of the first two 30-second extra periods. Chase scored the winning takedown with 18 seconds remaining the second overtime period to win the match, 9-7.
Allen bowed out of the tournament with an 11-1 loss to Kyle Diesel from Wilkes (Pa.) University. Diesel used a takedown and a pair of two-point near-falls to open a 6-0 lead and never look back. Allen's only point came in the third period when Diesel was called for stalling for a second time.
Allen finishes the season with a 20-10 record. He ends his four-year career in a Comet uniform with 85 wins, with 24 pins.
