Wrestling: Alma wins “Rivalry” match over Comets, 29-10
The Olivet College wrestling team fell to Alma College, 29-10, in a battle of nationally-ranked programs tonight at Art Smith Arena in Alma.
ALMA, Mich. – The Olivet College wrestling team fell to Alma College, 29-10, in a battle of nationally-ranked programs tonight at Art Smith Arena in Alma. The Scots entered the match ranked No. 14 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Top 30 poll, while the Comets are No. 24.
The night started at 184 pounds, where sophomore Rodney Harvey put the first three team points on the scoreboard for Olivet with a 5-2 victory. Alma won the next three bouts, 5-1, 10-0 and 5-3, to go up 10-3. The Comets made the score 10-6 after senior Matt Darling posted a 4-3 win at 133 pounds. He scored a takedown with 20 seconds left to secure the victory.
The Comets tied the match at 10-10 after freshman Dominick Trevino won 14-3 major decision at 141 pounds. The Scots took the lead back with a 4-2 decision at 149 pounds. Alma extended its lead with 9-1 win at 157 pounds before recording back-to-back pins to close out the match at 165 and 174 pounds.
Olivet travels to Illinois Saturday to participate in the Elmhurst College/Al Hanke Invitational. Action from inside R.A. Faganel Hall starts at 10 a.m. CST.
