Wrestling: Olivet splits four matches at 2014 Comet Duals
The Olivet College wrestling team had a 2-2 record today at the 2014 Comet Duals. The Comets defeated Davenport University, 31-15, and Heidelberg (Ohio) University, 27-9, but fell to Muskegon Community College, 23-22, and University of Wis.-Whitewater, 27-8.
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College wrestling team had a 2-2 record today at the 2014 Comet Duals. The Comets defeated Davenport University, 31-15, and Heidelberg (Ohio) University, 27-9, but fell to Muskegon Community College, 23-22, and University of Wis.-Whitewater, 27-8.
In its first match against Davenport, Olivet won six-of-10 bouts and scored bonus points in five of the six wins. Sophomore 125-pounder Michael Schmidt, sophomore 149-pounder Ross Pennock and sophomore 197-pounder Rodney Harvey all earned forfeit wins. Sophomore 165-pounder Frederick Findeisen picked-up a medical forfeit win.
Sophomore 149-pounder Sejad Al-Hussain posted a 10-2 major decision win. Senior 174-pounder Nick Allen won an 11-5 minor decision.
The outcome of the Comets' next match against Muskegon CC came down to the 285-pound bout and the final seconds of it when Jay Sroufe won by fall. Both teams won five bouts.
Schmidt earned another win by forfeit to put the first six team points on the scoreboard. The Jayhawks answered with two straight major decisions to go up 8-6. Senior 149-pounder Kyle Witgen gave the lead back to the Comets with a 6-2 win.
Muskegon CC won the next two matches to take a 17-9 lead. Olivet responded with three straight wins – a 13-3 major decision by Allen at 174 pounds, a forfeit win for senior Justin Johnson at 184 pounds and a 3-2 minor decision by sophomore Thomas Hall at 197 pounds – to gain a 22-17 lead. The Jayhawks used the pin with 19 seconds left in the 285-pound match to post the come-from-behind win.
The Comets overwhelmed Heidelberg in its next match, winning 8-of-10 bouts with one fall and seven minor decisions. Winning by fall was senior 157-pounder Jacob Gould.
Minor decisions wins were by Schmidt, 3-2, at 125 pounds; senior Matt Darling, 5-4, at 133 pounds; sophomore Dominick Trevino, 3-1, at 141 pounds; Witgen, 10-4, at 149 pounds; Allen, 4-0, at 174 pounds; Hall, 7-3, at 197 pounds; and senior Ryan Steverson, 4-3 in overtime, at 285 pounds.
Olivet won only two bouts against Wis.-Whitewater. Schmidt had a 13-3 win at 125 pounds, and Allen improved to 4-0 on the day with a 9-0 major decision at 174 pounds.
The Comets are now idle until Saturday, Dec. 6, when they compete at the 2014 Ohio Northern University Polar Bear Invitational.
