Wrestling: Comets lose 33-7 to Wabash in season-opener
The Olivet College wrestling team suffered a 33-7 loss to Wabash (Ind.) College tonight in its season-opener at Carroll High School in Fort Wayne, Ind.
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Olivet College wrestling team suffered a 33-7 loss to Wabash (Ind.) College tonight in its season-opener at Carroll High School in Fort Wayne, Ind. Wabash entered the match ranked No. 3 in the preseason National Wrestling Coaches Association poll.
Sophomore Michael Schmidt put the first three team points on the scoreboard for the Comets with a 7-2 win at 125 pounds. The Little Giants then won eight straight bouts – 11-5 at 133 pounds, 9-1 at 141 pounds, 8-7 at 149 pounds, pin at 157 pounds, 11-1 at 165 pounds, pin at 174 pounds, 16-4 at 184 pounds and 11-9 at 197 pounds – to take a 33-3 lead.
Sophomore Jesse Judge stopped Wabash's win streak by posting an 11-1 major decision victory in the final bout of the night at 285 pounds.
Olivet travels to Ypsilanti Saturday for the Eastern Michigan University Duals. The Comets will face a pair of NCAA Division I foes, Northern Illinois University at 10 a.m. and Michigan State University at 1 p.m.
