Women’s lacrosse team lets lead slip away in 9-7 loss to Trine
The Olivet College women’s lacrosse team let a 7-5 lead slip away, as Trine (Ind.) University scored the final four goals of the game to beat the Comets, 9-7, this evening at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College women's lacrosse team let a 7-5 lead slip away, as Trine (Ind.) University scored the final four goals of the game to beat the Comets, 9-7, this evening at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
The Thunder scored the first goal at the 26:35 mark of the first half. Olivet responded with three straight goals – one each for freshman Hannah Cook, senior Cecilia Bayne and freshman Kara Dishaw – to go up 3-0 around the midpoint of the opening half. Trine netted a goal at the 1:17 mark before Dishaw scored with 13 seconds left in the half to give the Comets a 4-2 halftime lead.
To start the second half, the Thunder scored three consecutive goals to take a 5-4 lead. Bayne won the draw control after the third goal and went straight down the field to knot the score at 5-5. Sophomore Krystin Verran scored off a free-position attempt to put Olivet back on top, 6-5, and then a goal by Bayne made the score 7-6 with 7:48 remaining in the game. Trine scored the final four goals in the final six minutes of the game.
Bayne finished with a hat trick, three goals, to lead the Comets. Dishaw added two goals, while Cook and Verran each had a goal and an assist for two points. Bayne also topped the team with eight shots and four draw controls. Junior Xavier Vance had 16 saves in goal, while facing 41 shots.
The Comets will conclude their season Saturday when they host the Calvin College Knights for Senior Day. Game time is 1 p.m.
