Women’s lacrosse: Olivet rolls past Trine, 12-7, to secure spot in 2015 MIAA Tournament
The Olivet College women’s lacrosse team closed out the regular season portion of its schedule with a 12-7 victory over Trine (Ind.) University today at Fred Zollner Stadium in Angola, Indiana.
ANGOLA, Ind. – The Olivet College women's lacrosse team closed out the regular season portion of its schedule with a 12-7 victory over Trine (Ind.) University today at Fred Zollner Stadium in Angola, Indiana. With the win, the Comets have secured a spot in the 2015 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament.
Seniors Taylor Guarnaccia, Mackenzie Inman and Geri Merrell scored four goals apiece. Guarnaccia also dished out an assist for a game-high five points.
Olivet scored the first six goals to go up 6-0 with 8:39 left in the opening half. During that run, Merrell had three goals, Inman had two and Guarnaccia had one. The teams traded the final four goals of the half to make the score 8-2 at the break.
After Merrell scored off a feed from Guarnaccia at the 28:50 mark of the second half, Trine scored twice to trail by five, 9-4. The Comets responded by scoring three of the next four goals to take a 12-5 lead. The last two goals of that scoring spurt came in a 34-second span. The Thunder netted the final two goals of the game for the final margin.
Guarnaccia and Merrell each needed 11 shots for score their four goals. Inman took eight shots, placing all eight on-frame. Guarnaccia also posted a team-high five draw controls.
Sophomore Xavier Vance played the first 53 minutes and four seconds in goal. She faced 10 shots and made five saves. Junior Hailey Bond completed the game in net.
The Comets have earned the No. 4 seed in the MIAA Tournament and will travel to play No. 1 seed Calvin College next Wednesday, April 29, at 5 p.m. Tickets for the game with will be on sale at the Zuidema Field entrance. They are $7 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens. MIAA students will be admitted free to the game with a valid student ID.
