Women’s lacrosse: Olivet breaks single-game goals record in 19-12 win over Benedictine
The Olivet College women’s lacrosse team broke the single-game school record for goals in a 19-12 win over Benedictine (Ill.) University today at Mackenzie Field in Kalamazoo.
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Olivet College women's lacrosse team broke the single-game school record for goals in a 19-12 win over Benedictine (Ill.) University today at Mackenzie Field in Kalamazoo.
The Comets raced out to a 6-0 lead behind two goals each for seniors Mackenzie Inman and Geri Merrell, and one each for seniors Taylor Guarnaccia and Brittany Hayes. After the Eagles scored their first goal, Guarnaccia netted a free-position goal to make the 7-1 with 15:14 left before halftime.
Over the final 15 minutes and 14 seconds of the first half, Benedictine scored six unanswered goals to tie the game, 7-7, at halftime. Freshman Krystin Verran scored two unassisted goals early in the second half to put Olivet ahead 9-7.
Benedictine responded with two goals to knot the score at 9-9. The Comets scored 10 of the final 13 goals in the game to pull out the win.
Merrell finished the game with five goals and one assist for six points, which ties for the fifth-most in a single-game in school history. Guarnaccia also scored five goals to go along with seven draw controls. Inman had three goals and one assist. Verran scored three goals. Sophomore Xavier Vance was the winning keeper, as she played all 60 minutes and made six saves.
Olivet is back in action Tuesday, March 17, when it hosts Defiance (Ohio) College for its home-opener at the Cutler Athletic Complex, starting at 6 p.m.
