Women’s lacrosse team loses to Calvin, 18-10
The Olivet College women’s lacrosse team fell to Calvin College, 18-10, tonight in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) contest at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College women's lacrosse team fell to Calvin College, 18-10, tonight in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) contest at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
The Knights jumped out to a 6-0 lead before junior Mackenzie Inman (Union City) put the Comets on the scoreboard with an unassisted tally at the 9:54 mark. Calvin scored two more goals to go up 8-1.
Olivet fought back with three straight goals, one each by Inman and juniors Taylor Guarnaccia (East Lansing/Haslett) and Geri Merrell (Battle Creek/Lakeview) to make the score 8-4. The Knights added another goal but Inman scored with four seconds left before halftime to make the score 9-5 at the break.
The second half was very similar to the first 30 minutes of play. Calvin netted four goals in the first six minutes of the half to gain a 13-5 lead. Inman scored a goal before the Knights added two more goals for a 15-6 lead
The Comets responded with three straight goals – two by Inman and one by Guarnaccia – to trail by six, 15-9. Calvin scored three of the final four goals of the game to earn the 18-10 win.
The game featured many fouls, especially in the 8-meter fan, which resulted in the teams combining for 30 free-position attempts. Olivet made 6-of-19 free-position goals, while the Knights made only 3-of-11 attempts. The Comets won 15 draw controls , led by Guarnaccia with eight, which ties for the second-most for a single-game in school history.
Inman scored six goals, tying for the second-most in a single-game in school history, while her six points ties for the third-best single-game total. She did break the single-game record with 14 shots, while her three free-position goals ties for the most in a game. Guarnaccia and Merrell each finished the game with two goals. Freshman Xavier Vance (West Bloomfield) collected eight saves in net.
The Comets travel to play Hope College Thursday night at 6 p.m.
NOTES: Inman has 25 goals and 26 points this season. Both totals are tied for third in school history for a single-season. Her 67 shots is third all-time, while Guarnaccia's 31 draw controls also sits third all-time for a season.
