Women’s lacrosse team defeats Trine, 13-6, in MIAA-opener
The Olivet College women’s lacrosse team defeated Trine (Ind.) University, 13-6, in its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) opener this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College women's lacrosse team defeated Trine (Ind.) University, 13-6, in its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) opener this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
After Trine scored the first goal of the game, the Comets scored twice to take a 2-1 lead. The Thunder came back to tie the game at 2-2 before junior Geri Merrell (Battle Creek/Lakeview) gave the lead back to Olivet. Trine knotted the score at 3-3. The Comets came back with two consecutive goals for a 5-3 lead. Taylor Gast netted back-to-back goals to force another tie, 5-5.
From there, Olivet ended the half on a 4-0 run to take a 9-5 lead. The last goal was scored by junior Mackenzie Inman (Union City) right before the halftime horn sounded. The Comets outscored the Thunder, 3-1, in the second half to preserve their win.
For the game, Olivet out-shot Trine, 33-24, including a 25-13 advantage in shots on-goal. Inman led the way with 11 shots, while junior Taylor Guarnaccia (East Lansing/Haslett) had nine. Guarnaccia finished with six points, five goals and one assist. Inman also scored five goals. Merrell had three goals and one assist for four points. Freshman Xavier Vance (West Bloomfield) played all 60 minutes in goal, recording seven saves.
The Comets (2-7, 1-0 MIAA) conclude a three-game home stand next Tuesday, April 8, with a 6 p.m. game against Calvin College.
