Women’s golf team finishes in three-way tie for ninth-place at Kathy Niepagen Spring Fling
Senior Casey Lamp tied the individual 36-hole school record and tied for fifth-place in the player standings to lead the Olivet College women’s golf team to a share for ninth-place in the team standings at the 2016 Kathy Niepagen Spring Fling. Illinois Wesleyan University hosted the two-day tournament at the Ironwood Golf Club in Normal, Illinois.
NORMAL, Ill. – Senior Casey Lamp tied the individual 36-hole school record and tied for fifth-place in the player standings to lead the Olivet College women's golf team to a share for ninth-place in the team standings at the 2016 Kathy Niepagen Spring Fling. Illinois Wesleyan University hosted the two-day tournament at the Ironwood Golf Club in Normal, Illinois.
Today, Lamp led the Comets with a one-under par 71, which ties for the second-best 18-hole score in school history. She birdied a team-best four holes to go along with 11 pars and three bogeys. Three of the birdies were on par fours. Today's total gives her a two-day round of 149 strokes to land a spot on the all-tournament team.
After shooting a 319 team in Saturday's first round, the Comets improved by four strokes today with a 315 for a 634 two-day total. The total ties for second-best 36-hole team score in school history. St. Catherine (Minn.) University and Carthage (Wis.) College also shot 634s.
The host Titans and Indiana Tech tied for the team title with 614s. Indiana Tech had back-to-back 307s for its 614, while IWU had 302 in the first round and 312 in the second round. DePauw (Ind.) University was third at 619 (312-307), followed by DePauw (Ind.) University, 619 (312-307); Washington University-St. Louis (Mo.), 620 (313-307); Wittenberg (Ohio) University, 622 (315-307); Centre (Ky.) College, 624 (315-309); Huntingdon (Ala.) College, 630 (319-311); and Grinnell (Iowa) College, 630 (315-315).
One day after posting a career-best 79, freshman Hayley Cooper improved by one stroke in today's round to set a new career-best with a 78 to give her a two-day total 157 strokes and share 22nd-place in the player standings. In today's round, she birdied two holes, including one on her last hole, the par 4, 370-yard No. 5. Cooper also had nine pars, six bogeys and one double bogey.
Junior Laura Bacso finished today's round with an 82 for a two-round total of 162 strokes. Today, she recorded 10 pars, six bogeys and two double bogeys. Senior Brooke Kastamo finished with an 86 in today's round. After shooting at +12 through her first eight holes, she was only +2 over her final 10 holes. Kastamo recorded a two-day total of 168 strokes. Senior Kirstin Langer also shot one stroke better in today's round with an 84 to give her a two-day total of 169 strokes.
The Comets now turn their focus to 54-hole playoff to determine the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association's automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA DIII National Championships. Olivet will host the first round next Tuesday, April 26, on its home course, The Medalist Golf Club in Marshall. The final 36 holes will be played Friday and Saturday, April 29-30 at the Ravines Golf Club in Saugatuck.
