Women’s golf: Olivet sits in sixth-place at Jekyll Island Classic

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – The Olivet College women's golf team sits in sixth-place but is only three strokes out of second-place after the first round of the Jekyll Island Collegiate Classic at the Indian Mound Golf Course in Jekyll Island, Georgia.
Competing for the first time this spring, the Comets posted a 332 team score on the par 72 and 5,801-yard course. Rhodes (Tenn.) College leads the 19-team field with a 322. Huntingdon (Ala.) College, Illinois Wesleyan University and New York University are all tied for second-place with 329s. Centre (Ky.) College is fifth at 331.
Junior Brooke Kastamo carded a 79 for Olivet's low score to share fifth-place in the player standings with three other golfer. Starting on the back nine of the course, she had six straight pars before bogeying No. 16. Kastamo went back to even par with a birdie on No. 17. A double bogey put her at +2 after nine holes. Kastamo then had two pars and two double bogeys to start the front nine to go to +6. She then scored four straight pars until ending the round with a bogey for a seven-over par 79.
Sophomore Laura Bacso completed her round in 83 strokes, with a 41 on the back nine and 42 on the front nine. She had birdies on the par 3 No. 12 and the par 3 No. 2. Junior Casey Lamp was one stroke behind at 84. She also had a 41 on the back nine before shooting a 43 on the front nine.
Sophomore Allyson Schultz had 43s on the front and back nines for an 86. She was consistent in her round, as she had five pars, 12 bogies and one double bogey. Junior Kirstin Langer rounded out Olivet's starting five with a 91. After finishing the back nine in 43 strokes, she finished the front nine with a 48.
Tee times for tomorrow's second of three rounds will begin at 8 a.m.
