Women’s Basketball: Olivet ends season with 70-45 loss to Trine in MIAA Tournament first round

ANGOLA, Ind. – The University of Olivet women's basketball team saw its season end with a 70-45 loss to Trine (Ind.) University in the first round of the 2024 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament tonight at the MTI Center.

- Records: Olivet 9-17 overall, Trine 19-7 overall
- Trine scored the first four points of the game. Olivet answered with back-to-back baskets to level the score. After the Thunder made the next basket, the Comets scored the next five points to go up 9-6. Trine responded with a 7-0 spurt to gain its largest lead of the quarter, 14-9. The teams traded points to create a 16-11 score at the end of the opening quarter.
- Olivet put the first point on the scoreboard in the second period. Trine countered with a basket to take an 18-12 lead with 9:14 left in the quarter. The Comets outscored the Thunder, 9-0, over the next five minutes to gain a 21-18 lead. Trine made a free throw and layup to even the score at 21-21 at the 1:09 mark. Olivet had a couple chances to take the lead back but missed shots. The Thunder drained two free throws in the final seconds of the quarter for a 23-21 lead at halftime.
- Early in the third, Trine's advantage grew to seven points twice. Following the second time at 31-24, the Comets made three straight baskets to cut their deficit down to one point at the 5:56 mark. The Thunder came back with 10-1 run to take their first double digit lead of the game, 41-31. Olivet used two free throws and a three-pointer to trim their shortfall in half. Trine put the final eight points on the scoreboard to go up 13 points, 49-36, at the end of the quarter. The Comets did not get any closer for the rest of the game.
- Senior Lily Connelly was the lone Olivet player to score in double figures, as she had 11 points.
- Freshman Savannah Brewer added nine points.
- Freshman Kaylee Bush tallied eight points.
- Freshman Christina Malackanich finished with seven points and team-leading five rebounds.
