Women’s basketball team upended by Trine, 67-53
The Olivet College women’s basketball team was upended by Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) leader Trine (Ind.) University, 67-53, this evening at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.

OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College women's basketball team was upended by Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) leader Trine (Ind.) University, 67-53, this evening at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Neither team led by more than three points for most of the first quarter. Olivet took its largest lead, 17-13, with 2:15 left in the opening quarter. The Thunder made a basket to make the score 17-15 but a layup by sophomore Amari Brown pushed the Comet lead back to four points, 19-15, at the end of period.
- Olivet held the lead for the first seven minutes and 15 seconds of the second quarter. Trine took its first lead, 28-27. The Comets scored the next four points on baskets by freshman Fayth Talbert and senior Kadesha Taylor, to go up 31-28. Montana Martin made a three-pointer to level the score, 31-31, at halftime.
- The Thunder scored the first eight points of the third quarter to go up 39-31. Olivet chipped away at its deficit and trailed by only five points, 47-42, to start the fourth quarter.
- The Comets made the first two field goals of the final quarter to make the score 47-46. Trine answered with a 10-0 run to extend its lead to double figures for the first time, 57-46. Olivet was never able to recover from that deficit.
FOR THE COMETS
- Olivet posted a 43.8 field goal percentage compared to 43.1 percent for the Thunder. The difference in the game was Trine made one more three-pointer and 11 more free throws.
- Freshman Sydnee Dennis scored a team-high 11 points, all in the first half.
- Taylor finished with 10 points.
- Junior Shawnee Dame had eight points and team-high eight rebounds.
FOR THE THUNDER
- Martin came off the bench to lead all players with 15 points.
- Cassidy Williams was next with 12 points.
- Katy Steers contributed 11 points.
- Brandi Dawson, this week's MIAA Player of the Week, was held to 10 points and 10 rebounds in 37 minutes.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Trine entered the game ranked No. 9 in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll and No. 8 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) poll.
- Olivet's 43.8 shooting percentage was the best by an MIAA opponent against the Thunder this season.

- Olivet is off until next Wednesday, Feb. 7, when it makes the trip to play Kalamazoo College at 7:30 p.m.
