Women’s basketball team stings Kalamazoo, 67-50
The Olivet College women’s basketball team improved its overall record to 12-9 with a 67-50 win over Kalamazoo College tonight at the Anderson Athletic Center in Kalamazoo. With the win, Olivet maintains third-place in the MIAA standings with an 8-4 record.
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Olivet College women's basketball team improved its overall record to 12-9 with a 67-50 win over Kalamazoo College tonight at the Anderson Athletic Center in Kalamazoo. With the win, Olivet maintains third-place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association standings with an 8-4 record.
The Comets scored the first seven points of the game. The Hornets responded with a 7-2 run to trim their deficit down to two points, 9-7. Olivet pushed its lead back to six points, 17-11, at the end of the first quarter. Kalamazoo netted the first six points of the second quarter to tie the game at 17-17. Olivet scored the next basket. The Comets did not trail for the rest of the first half, with their eight-point lead at halftime, 31-23, being its largest cushion of the game.
Olivet stretched its lead to double figures for the first time when senior Dallas Austin drained a three-pointer at the start of the third quarter. The Hornets chipped away at their deficit and trailed by only seven points, 41-34, with three minutes remaining in the quarter.
The Comets ended the quarter on a 9-0 run, including a rare four-point play by senior Shauni Hankins, to take their biggest lead of the game, 50-34. Kalamazoo would get as close as 13 points on two occasions in the fourth quarter. The last time was 58-45 at the 4:04 mark. Olivet would seal its win with a 7-0 scoring spurt for its largest lead of the game, 65-45.
For the game, the Comets shot 43.3 percent (29-of-67) from the floor compared to 30.9 percent (17-of-55) for the Hornets. Olivet also had a +13 advantage in rebounding, 46-33, and turned the ball over five less times, 15-10. Senior Bre Kidd was the only Comet in double figures with 15 points. Hankins finished with eight points. Junior Katie McKinnon scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds. Austin also had seven points to go along with six rebounds.
Emily Kozal led Kalamazoo with a game-high 22 points. Grace Smith grabbed a game-best 10 rebounds.
The Comets have their bye on Saturday and are back in action next Wednesday, Feb. 10, with a 7:30 p.m. game at Calvin College.
