Women’s basketball team beats Illinois Tech, 94-13
The Olivet College women’s basketball team raced out to a 41-0 halftime lead and coasted to a 94-13 win over Illinois Institute of Technology today in an afternoon matinee at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College women's basketball team raced out to a 41-0 halftime lead and coasted to a 94-13 win over Illinois Institute of Technology today in an afternoon matinee at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet. Two single-game records were broken in the contest, the 81-point margin of victory and the 13 points are the least amount by an opponent. The 94 points scored by the Comets is the eighth-most in school history for a game.
The Comets built their 41-0 lead at halftime behind 16-of-28 shooting from the floor, with two baskets from behind the arc, and 7-of-9 free throws. The Scarlet Hawks did not make any of their 26 field goals and missed their only two free throw attempts with 1.1 seconds left in the second quarter.
Olivet led 48-0 in the third quarter when Illinois Tech scored its first basket of the game at the 7:54 mark. The Comets would go onto out-score the Scarlet Hawks, 20-2, for the rest of the period to take a 68-4 lead into the fourth quarter. Olivet did not play any of its starters in the final quarter, as the reserves put 26 points on the scoreboard in the period. Illinois Tech had its most productive quarter of the game, scoring nine points on two three-pointers and three free throws.
For the game, the Comets shot a season-best 59 percent (36-of-61) from the floor and held the Scarlet Hawks to 7.4 percent shooting (4-of-54). Fourteen Olivet players saw action in the game, and all 14 scored at least one point. Senior Shauni Hankins led the way with 14 points. Junior Leeza Donald was next with 13 points, while senior Jackie Harwood and sophomore Ayren Parrish had 11 points apiece. Senior Dallas Austin contributed 10 points.
Four players – Austin, Donald and seniors Bre Kidd and Morgan West – each grabbed a team-best six rebounds. West also dished out a team-leading five of Olivet's 27 assists. To go along with her 10 points and six rebounds, Austin had four assists and four steals.
Hailey Borowczyk scored five points to lead Illinois Tech (0-12). Venika Jarvis pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
Olivet (7-6) resumes its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association schedule Saturday against Calvin College. Tip-off inside The Cutler Event Center is scheduled for 1 p.m. The game is a part of basketball doubleheader, as the Olivet men face Hope College after the women's game.
