Women’s basketball team defeats Kalamazoo, 79-52
Shauni Hankins scored a game-high 19 points and Gabby Trudell came off the bench to score a season-high 13 points, as the Olivet College women’s basketball team defeated Kalamazoo College, 79-52, this afternoon at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. – Senior Shauni Hankins scored a game-high 19 points and junior Gabby Trudell came off the bench to score a season-high 13 points, as the Olivet College women's basketball team defeated Kalamazoo College, 79-52, in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association contest this afternoon at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.
The Comets put the first five points on the scoreboard on a layup by junior T'Keiya Collins and a three-pointer by senior Dallas Austin. Those baskets helped Olivet lead by as many as nine points, 22-13, in the first quarter. The Hornets netted a free throw to make the score 22-14 after 10 minutes of play. The Comets' 15-point lead, 38-23, at halftime was their largest lead of the game.
Olivet opened the third quarter on a 6-1 run to stretch its lead to 20 points. The lead would grow to as many as 27 points with 54 seconds remaining in the quarter when senior Leighann Thilo drained a three-pointer. A Hornet free throw made the score 66-40 entering the fourth quarter. The Comets' biggest lead of the fourth quarter would be 28 points.
For the game, the Comets shot 45.8 percent (33-of-72) from the floor and made a season-high nine baskets from behind the arc. Thirteen Olivet players saw playing time, and 12 players scored at least two points. Hankins made 8-of-12 field goals, including three triples for her 19 points, to go along with four of the Comets' 21 assists. Trudell had six baskets and a free throw for her 13 points.
Austin had a solid overall game, scoring seven points, grabbing seven rebounds, dishing out six assists and making four steals. Senior Bre Kidd netted eight points and pulled down a team-leading eight rebounds.
Grace Smith posted a double-double with team-highs in points (18) and rebounds (10) to lead the Hornets. Emily Kozal finished with 11 points and eight rebounds. Claire Slaughter scored 10 and grabbed seven rebounds.
After playing its last four games at home, Olivet travels to play MIAA rival Albion College next Wednesday, Dec. 16, at 7:30 p.m.
