Women’s basketball team falls to Franklin, 56-44

OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College women's basketball team lost 56-44 to Franklin (Ind.) College in a non-conference contest this afternoon at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.
The Grizzlies scored the first four points of the game. The Comets answered with six straight points for a 6-4 lead with 4:32 left in the first quarter. Following a 6-6 and 8-8 tie, Franklin netted four straight points to take a 12-8 advantage. Sophomore Ayren Parrish drained a three-pointer to cut Olivet's deficit to one, 12-11. The Grizzlies got a layup late in the quarter to take a 14-11 lead after one quarter of play.
The Comets would close to one point on three occasions in the second quarter. The last time was 20-19 at the 6:34 mark. Franklin scored the final eight points of the quarter to go ahead by nine points, 28-19, at halftime.
The Grizzlies stretched their lead to 21 points, 44-23, with 2:41 left in the third quarter. Olivet scored six of the final seven points of the period to trail by 16 points, 45-29, entering the fourth quarter.
The Comets opened the second half of a 12-4 run to trim the gap in half, 49-41. Olivet trailed by eight points one more time before Franklin made four free throws in the final minute and 14 seconds to win by 12.
For the game, the Comets shot 26.8 percent from the floor compared to 33.9 percent for the Grizzlies, who made seven more free throws, 17 to 10. Franklin also turned the ball over six less times, 19 to 25. Parrish was Olivet's leading scorer with nine points. Senior Shauni Hankins added eight points and three steals. Senior Dallas Austin pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
For Franklin, Courtney Phillips led all players with 14 points. Katie Brewer finished with a double-double, 10 points and 11 rebounds, to go along with seven blocked shots. Kayle Comer also had 10 points.
The Comets open Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play next Monday, Nov. 30, when they host Saint Mary's (Ind.) College. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
