Women’s basketball: Olivet bows out of MIAA Tournament with 88-54 loss to Calvin
The fourth-seeded Olivet College women’s basketball team ended its season with a 88-54 loss to No. 1 seed Calvin College tonight in the semifinals of 2015 MIAA Tournament at Van Noord Arena in Grand Rapids.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The fourth-seeded Olivet College women's basketball team ended its 2014-15 season with a 88-54 loss to No. 1 seed Calvin College tonight in the semifinals of the 2015 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament at Van Noord Arena in Grand Rapids.
In the first half, Olivet led 4-0 behind a jumper by senior Carli Reid and two free throws by junior Bre Kidd. The Knights scored the next nine points and never looked back. Calvin's 36-point cushion, 57-21, was its largest lead of the opening half. The Knights made 22-of-34 baskets (64.7 percent), including 10-of-18 (55.6 percent) from behind three-point range, in the first half. The Comets were held to 8-of-23 shooting (34.8 percent) from the floor and 5-of-7 (71.4 percent) from the free throw line.
In the second half, Calvin stretched its lead to as many as 47 points, 74-27, at the 13:51 mark. The closest Olivet got to the Knights would be 32 points, 83-51, after freshman Ayren Parrish made a layup with 1:06 left. The Comets did out-score Calvin by two points, 33-31, in the second stanza.
The Knights finished the game with a 60.4 field goal percentage, making 32-of-53 baskets, with 15-of-26 shooting from behind the arc. Olivet made 21-of-61 (34.4 percent) field goals and 11-of-18 (51.1 percent) from the charity stripe.
The Comets were led by Reid and senior Stefanie Lang in their final collegiate basketball game. Reid scored a game-high 13 points, while Lang posted a double-double, 12 points and game-high 10 rebounds. Junior Shauni Hankins scored six points.
Hannah Acre paced the Knights with a game-high 16 points to go along with seven rebounds.
NOTES: Lang ends an outstanding three-year career in a Comet uniform, finishing as the all-time leader for blocked shots (109) and field goals made (499), second in scoring (1,208 points) and field goals attempted (1,006), and third in rebounds (772).
